Major in Economics
If you're curious about how the economy works, why markets change, or how businesses and governments make important decisions, an Economics degree can prepare you for a wide range of rewarding careers. The Idaho State University Economics program helps students develop strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills that are valued in business, finance, government, consulting, research, and public policy.
Economics is the study of how individuals, businesses, and governments make decisions about limited resources. Students learn how markets function, why prices fluctuate, how economic policies affect communities, and how data can be used to solve real-world challenges. Through applied learning experiences, students strengthen their skills in economic analysis, forecasting, data interpretation, and strategic decision-making, preparing them to understand and address complex issues facing today's global economy.
One of the program's unique advantages is the Flexible BBA option, which allows many students to double major in Economics and another business discipline, such as Finance, Marketing, or Management, with little to no additional coursework. This flexibility enables students to broaden their expertise, customize their education, and expand their career opportunities after graduation.

Hands-On Learning and Real-World Economics Experience
Idaho Economic Outlook Symposium
Economics students have the opportunity to attend the Idaho Economic Outlook Symposium at no cost, gaining direct access to one of the region's premier business and economic forecasting events. The symposium brings together economists, business leaders, industry experts, policymakers, and entrepreneurs from across Idaho to discuss the trends shaping the state's economy and future growth. Students can network with professionals while learning about key topics such as employment trends, population growth, personal income forecasts, tax revenues, business conditions, and emerging opportunities throughout Idaho. In addition to valuable professional development opportunities, participating students may be eligible to receive an Idaho Economic Outlook Symposium scholarship.
Applied Economics Research Projects
Economics students gain hands-on experience by participating in real-world research projects that address important business and community challenges. Each semester, students apply economic theory, data analysis, and problem-solving skills to projects that help organizations and decision-makers better understand economic trends and opportunities.
In a recent project, students analyzed the potential economic impact of the restoration of Pocatello's Portneuf River. Working with real economic data, students evaluated how revitalization efforts could affect local businesses, tourism, economic development, and community growth. They then presented their findings to city leaders and community stakeholders, providing research that helps inform future planning and investment decisions.
Bachelor of Science Option for a More Quantitative Degree
In addition to the traditional Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Economics, Idaho State also offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Economics for students seeking a more quantitative and analytical degree. The BS is an excellent choice for students planning to attend law school or pursue graduate study in economics, finance, public policy, or other data-driven fields. International students who complete the BS may also be eligible for up to three years of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. With relatively few required courses, the program also makes it easy to add Economics as a second major or switch into the degree while maintaining progress toward graduation.
